Performance Enrichment Activities for Kids

By integrating dance and theater into Core Academics students learn how offers students a great way to apply Performance Enrichment Activities have been designed using criteria provided by the New York City Blueprint for Dance and the New York City Blueprint for Theater. Programs are available once a week or twice a week. There is a 12 week minimum. Programs are tailored to the needs of each school and the number of lessons can be adjusted.

 

Pre K- 2nd grade

Dances from Around the world

Young students are introduced to basic dance moves from various cultures. While enjoying Country Line Dancing, Bollywood, African Fusion, Irish Step Dancing, Merengue, students explore global music.

Programs Length: 12 lessons/ 18 lessons/ 36 lessons

36 week course and twice a week courses include cross discipline with Social Studies.

 

Music & Movement: Silly Songs & Dance Adventures

Students learn about the origins of Hip Hop dance. Dance moves from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, to the present are learned along with an exploration into hip hop music. Students have fun learning to beat box. This class meets once a week.

3rd grade -8th grade

Dances from Around the world

Contemporary Jazz & Musical Theater Jazz Dance

Students will build a solid dance foundation while moving to pop song and musical theater soundtracks. Dance vocabulary is introduced and dance analytics skills are developed. Students will also apply their dance their analytical skills to discussing either a video tapped performance or a live performance. Mathematical skills are developed as students learn to interpret choreography and music structure. This program is ideal for Grades 4 and up. The program concludes in a student showcase.

Ballroom & Latin Dance

Students are introduced to the world of American Standard Ballroom and Rhythm dances. Students will learn social dance etiquette in addition to building self-confidence, improving posture, and coordination. Through dances like Waltz, Fox Trot, Tango, Hustle, East Coast Swing, Salsa on 1, Merengue, Samba students will develop mathematical skills as they learn to interpret choreography and music structure. This program is ideal for Grades 3 and up. The program concludes in a student showcase.

Program Length: 12 lessons/ 18 lessons/ 36 lessons

36 week course and twice a week courses include cross discipline with Social Studies. Students will partake in Dancing Through the Decades for Grades 6 and up.

 

Hip Hop: movement & culture

Students learn about the origins of Hip Hop dance. Dance moves from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, to the present are learned along with an exploration into hip hop music. Students have fun learning to beat box. This class meets once a week.

Students will analyze radio theater scripts in this weekly course. Theater games are used to develop analytical skills while building self confidence. Students will learn to make sound effects  students will learn about various theater jobs. The program concludes in a production of a play and a mini awards ceremony for participation.

8th Grade -10th Grade

An Introduction to Shakespeare

Shakespeare’s plays can seem like a foreign language, but the popularity of these works resides in the vast displays of human emotion. Students will read, analyze, and perform scenes from some of Shakespeare’s greatest works. Introduction to Shakespeare is a great precursor to Shakespeare being taught in English class. It can also be structured to coincide with classroom curriculum.

Program Length: 12 lessons/ 18 lessons/ 36 lessons

36 lessons recommended if the school wishes to have students perform a full play.

 

Drama & Comedy: a performer’s perspective

Students will analyze commercials, films, and plays in this twice a week course. Theater games are used to develop analytical skills while building self confidence. In addition to writing  their own theatrical pieces, students will learn about various theater jobs. The program concludes in a production of a play and a mini awards ceremony for participation.

Program Length: 12 lessons/ 18 lessons/ 36 lessons

This course is structured as 2 lessons a week. If 2 days a week is not an option for your school, a shorter lesson plan can be arranged. This course offers cross discipline with Literature/ English classes.

 

Production & Playwriting

Students will analyze commercials, films, and plays in this twice a week course. Theater games are used to develop analytical skills while building self confidence. Students will write their own short plays and perform them.

Program Length: 12 lessons/ 18 lessons/ 36 lessons

Production & Playwriting can be planned in conjunction with Drama & Comedy for schools looking to offer students two semesters of performing arts.
