Camp| Learn Typing & Computer Skills
This Live Class Meets:
– 2 weeks
– 4 x a week (Mon-Thur)
$150 for the course
In this 6-week typing & computer literacy course, students work on: typing with two hands, how to use a mouse, how to copy and paste, how to save a file. This class is designed to help students learn to type with confidence without looking at the keyboard or resorting to typing one finger at a time. Students will learn to type based on what they see, hear, and think. Each class is gamified. Using a combination of teacher directed activities and typing software, this class makes learning to type fun.
Students who do the homework, generally see the greatest benefit from this class. Many students join this class as additional support to a typing class they may have at school or at their local library. Part of this course involves learning to navigate a computer with minimal adult assistance. For this reason, when a student is struggling to do tasks like share screen, minimize a page, or close tabs the teacher will talk with the student to help them solve the issue without an adult assisting. The goal is to help each student feel more confident in their computer usage skills and of course develop healthy typing habits.
Suitable for:
– students who finger type
– students who have to look at the keyboard to type
– students who are not confident with typing
– students who are not confident with keyboard shortcuts
– students who want extra support outside of a school typing course

This class is designed to help students develop a solid understanding of the computer keyboard QWERTY Layout (English- United States). This includes having memorized where many of the keys are, the ability to type without looking at the keyboard, the ability to use a computer mouse for basic functions, and the ability to use recognize keyboard shortcuts.
Most students will leave this course with the ability to type short paragraphs either from hearing words, reading words, or thinking of a story.
Day 1 preparation:
Before class, Please adjust your computer settings so that your child can screen share in class. For students age 7 to 8, please have an adult available if needed for any tech issues. It can be disruptive to the learning environment when we experience delays related to a learner’s inability to get assistance on the first day. Generally after day 1, the students are fine navigating the online platform on their own.
Typing is a skill that is developed by repeated practice. Four out of six classes are primarily students typing and getting to the know the keyboard. It can feel boring and while typing games can make things more fun, the games do not replace memorizing the keys. Students who do the homework generally see the greatest benefit from this class.
Typing.com does not capture student personal identifying information. Online accounts are set up by the instructor and only include the student’s name. No personal email address is required. This class also uses Google Docs. Parents do not have to any special accounts for the student. No personal identifying information for the student is required. Nearpod does not capture student personal identifying information. An online account is set up by the instructor and the student can create any name they want.
Students are asked to practice typing 5-10 minutes a day for 5 days a week. Students who practice outside of class not only finish the course with stronger typing skills, but they are also more comfortable doing the group computer skills projects in class.

Frequently Asked Questions
My child is shy, can they have their camera off during class?
No. Having the camera on allows the instructor to observe the student’s body movements and provide feedback to the student regarding their typing form.
If your child is concerned about other students “seeing” them contact us to discuss.
What is the Student engagement expectation?
This class includes some computer games, but games only account for at most 10 minutes of class time. We have found that longer “game” time tends to lead to students tying with one finger instead of holding correct typing form. Students become more focused on winning points in the game, as opposed to learning the keys.
We will miss some classes, can we make them up?
Please provide no less than 24 hours notice to reschedule a class. If your child will miss more than 1 class or you are uncertain of your child’s availability, please revisit this course when your child’s schedule allows for full attendance. Our small class sizes allow for teacher-student engagement. As class sizes are small, we are unable to offer a refund.
