Black History: Stories about Black Billionaires

Get to know about black billionaires. Each week students will learn about the life, financial achievements, and civic engagement of a black billionaire. Students will explore the impact each individual billionaire has had on financially stressed communities. After exploring the work of each billionaire students will write a summary of what they believe led that billionaire to success and create their own mini business plan, with community enrichment, modeled after that billionaire.

This class presents an objective view of each billionaire. We take a look at their childhood, education, early business failures or success, and current business/ income streams. We will then look at how each individual reinvests in black communities. Examples of civic engagement we will examine are whether an individual is focused on creating work opportunities for minorities or focused on creating educational opportunities for low income families. Using what we know about each billionaire students will then be encouraged to draft their own action plan modeled after the billionaire of the week.

Debate Club for High School

Whether you love to argue or hate to argue, chances are at some point in life you’ll have to argue your viewpoint. In this weekly debate club, students will be divided into two groups where they will be assigned to argue in favor of or against the “legislation” of the day. Students will be asked to argue in support of or against the weekly topic. Using a Team Policy Debate format each group will work in breakout rooms to formulate their main arguments, before beginning the debate. Participants will be asked to research at least one fact to support their viewpoint.

Our teachers provide a safe space for students to express opinions without feeling judged. By assigning a topic and a group we want to encourage students to make informed decisions. A student may be asked to argue in support of something they do not personally support. For example, the student is assigned to a group that argues in favor of healthcare for all. By participating in this class the student is asked to speak in favor of the legislation. At the end of class they can share their personal opinion via an anonymous poll (Google Forms) provided by the instructor.

This class is designed to support civic debate in addition to learning to use research to support a viewpoint. Students should be comfortable using the internet for research. Students will be instructed as to what types of support material can be used (no personal blogs/ celebrity social media accounts, no tabloids, gossip columns, or news sources that provide unverifiable information).

• A broom or towel for “cleaning” up Synderella’s room.

Any gender can audition for any role. While it is common for everyone to want to play the lead, this play is designed to allow all actors to shine. Some roles will be doubled up.

Ready to take your acting skills to the next level? If you’re ready to go beyond theater games and improv, and looking to develop performance skills then this is the class for you. In this semi-private acting class, we’ll work on acting techniques and practice reading copy. This class is perfect for the young actor who has a serious interest in acting and is willing to try to memorize their script. This class is structured like a professional rehearsal.

Ms. Rae provides a relaxed class environment that encourages peer to peer engagement. Students will receive feedback on their character choices and be asked to repeat both movement and words. Similar to learning to dance, learning an instrument, or developing a sports skill repetition is key to our progress. Actors under the age of 11 with very little acting experience can find the repetition challenging, frustrating, or boring. If you are new to acting please check out one of my other acting classes.

How will I know what scene I will get?

New scenes are provided for each new pair of students. Students who have taken this class before can repeat it and receive a new scene or a new character. There is no limit to the number of times you can retake this class.

Writing Essentials 2: Persuasive Essays and Argumentative Essays

In this 55-minute class, students will complete 2 essays over a period of 6 weeks. This class focuses on writing Persuasive Essays and Argumentative Essays. Students should have experience writing a 5 paragraph essay and understand basic sentence structure including identifying a fragment and a run-on sentence. This class is suitable for students who have previous essay writing experience and it is a great follow-up for students who have completed our Writing Essentials: Essay Writing for Middle School. Previous experience with essay writing is required. Some knowledge of grammar is helpful even if the student is unclear about the difference between a noun and a verb.

For the first three weeks, we will focus on Persuasive Essays and essay formatting.  Students will also begin to work on research skills during this session. The next 3 weeks focus on Argumentative Essays, research, and creating citations.

Less than half of our time in class is spent on instruction. This class is very hands on and the instructor provides individual feedback to students to help them better understand teacher feedback. Our goal is to help students feel more in control of their own writing process and more informed regarding teacher expectations.

Please note: Students who do not do the homework on time or skip steps, tend to spend a lot of time trying to catch up. This can lead to unfinished essays or poorly written essays.

This class is great for:

– Students who understand how to write a basic 5 paragraph essay

– Students who are looking to expand their essay writing skills

– Students who are starting to write research essays for other courses

– Students who are seeking a supportive in-class writing environment
